All padas, quarter-verses, are from the Mahabharata. Four eight-syllable padas make up a thirty-two syllable couplet called a shloka, by far the commonest metre in Sanskrit literature. A complete shloka looks like this:
गजास्ते पन्नगाभोगैर्हस्तैर्भूरेणुरूषितैः ।
निद्रान्धा वसुधां चक्रुर्घ्राणनिःश्वासशीतलाम् ।।
